United Airlines Family and Friends Day at SFO: Swag Alert!

United is once again holding its annual Family Day Open House for employees and their friends & family. And for the past several years, United has graciously opened up spots for a select few enthusiasts on Flyertalk and MilePoint.

Yesterday, the great folks at United again extended an offer to attend this year’s event:

We’re doing it again! United will be hosting its annual Family Day Open House for United employees and their families this year at SFO. Here are the details:

  • Date: Sunday October 13th
  • Time: 11:00am to 4:30pm
  • Location: SFO Maintenance Center

This year, we’re bringing back a lot of what you know and love, including aircraft on display (from multiple United narrow- and wide-bodies, to stunt planes and civilian models) and maintenance facility tours. Featured guests also include the Patriots precision flying team, which was founded by a United pilot and is the only civilian jet demonstration team in the United States.

As in years past, we expect a large turn-out at this event, but have secured a limited number of tickets for members here and a guest to attend. If you’d like to attend, please send us an email at insider@united.com with the following information:

  • Name
  • Email address
  • Guest’s name (if applicable)

We’ll handle requests on a first come, first served basis, and let you know by October 3rd if we’re able to confirm you. Once confirmed, you’ll receive an email with all the specifics. We look forward to seeing you there!

I’ve gone twice and had a blast both times, the latest being in 2011. I wrote up a full “trip report†of the event here. And in 2010, I put together a video summary of the day:

Both years I went, they had a large selection of United swag available… some free, some for purchase. It’s a great opportunity for #avgeeks to stock up on items you wouldn’t normally have a chance to buy, and often aren’t listed on the United Shop.

Speaking of which, I received an email from them yesterday noting that they’ve added new retro items:

a group of t-shirts and hats

New retro items at the United Shop

I don’t think I’ll attend this year’s event, but I highly recommend it if you’re a hard-core enthusiast. But act fast and follow the instructions United posted if you’re interested. Space is rather limited.

  1. I don’t know why in your tiltle you mention “Swag Alert”, as if anyone looking for swag, they will more than likely be disappointed. Looking back at 2011 and 2012, there weren’t any “swag” for free at all, you have to pay for it and it was very limited. The best “swag” they had given out for free I believe it was 2010, at that year’s event they were clearing out large chunk of old “tuilp” stocks if you remembered, lots of old UA destination travel agents posters (there were so many different ones given out that I had to buy a poster tube and Fedex back home!), drawstring backpacks, playing cards, sunglasses, blow up beach ball, keychains, etc. They were also selling that blue T-shirt on the back side have all the UA logos in UA’s 80 years history. 2010 SFO faimily day I also believed had the best aircrafts on display, 757PS, 777, 747, 320 and the newly painted new UA 739. Lets fingers crossed if 2013 UA family day would get to see a 787 or not.

  2. @ORDnHKG: There were definitely some freebies in 2011, plus I’m sure there will still be swag this year – paid or otherwise. Plus note the link to the United Shop. 😉

I, too, hope it’ll be another great event for everyone who attends… And a 787 would be great!

  3. I didn’t recall any, or can you tell me some of the giveways in 2011 perhaps I missed ?

UA did giveaway quite many “swag” for Airliners International 2013 (airline collectible show) at CLE back at the end of June, there were UA drawstring backback, headband, collapsible water bottle, and plane information cards, though this was a paid event.

  4. Free swag this year: 737 poster from Boeing, A350 poster from Airbus, A350XWB luggage tag
Paid swag this year: A $5 coffee mug with sUA logos ( blue tulip, yellow tulip, battleship gray)

    • @ORDnHKG: Thanks for the SWAG feedback from this year’s event. They also had (paid) shirts in a variety of designs the last time I was there (2011).
