I previously posted seat maps for American’s Boeing 727-100s from 1977 and 1985, and now bring you the “final†version seen flying the skies in 1987 for this installment of Vintage Airline Seat Maps.
I received some great insight into this aircraft type from reader John, who commented the following on the 1985 map:
I began flying for AA in 1984 and worked the -100, as we called it, MANY times…Everything from LGA-YYZ and LGA-DTW (AA used to be a fierce competitor in the DTW market) to EWR-DFW, RDU-CUN, DFW-CUN-CZM and ORD-PDX-EUG to name a few.
It really was not our favorite plane to work because of the single galley in the middle which made it really difficult to do the elaborate services we did back then…Both First Class and Coach were served out of the same galley.
We called the coach section behind First Class and forward of the galley, “The Twilight Zone.†The configuration changed again in 1987 when they ripped out the old galleys and put in galleys that accommodated carts. I think the configuration increased to 10 and 108 or 118.
And just as he said, the new layout after the galley overhaul did indeed increase coach capacity to 108 by adding a trio of seats on the port side, replacing the former cart storage location.
In first class you’d find me in 5A or 5F, and I’d opt for a window seat in The Twilight Zone in coach. 😉
Where would you sit?

I’d sit anywhere if I got the chance to fly on a 727 again!
@downhillcrasher: Good answer! (me, too, actually)
Really interesting one Darren, thanks.
@James K: Glad you enjoyed it! I’m happy John chimed in with those comments on the 1985 map so I could share them.
