This just in from “UA Insider” on Flyertalk… and it’s great news to avoid having to request an extension (click the text below for larger/complete view). Essentially, all Global and Regional Premier Upgrades (GPUs and RPUs) earned during one program year will be valid until the end of the following program year. So… for those earned this year, they won’t expire until January 31, 2014.
Cheers to United for doing a very customer-friendly thing. This change is expected to be implemented by month-end with no action required to extend those you currently have sitting in your account (that were EARNED in 2012). Those still at risk of expiring this month and next based on 2011 flying don’t fall under this new policy.

Not that it will do anything for me, as the only RPUs I will be earning will be earned in December, but it is nice to see that they are doing this. And I’d think it will save them money because they won’t have to handle calls for people trying extend them.
Nice, but as I lost a GPU 9 days ago when it expired at the end of October, doing this a little earlier would have helped me. Thanks United!
@MilesFromBlighty: Ouch… well… as always, once this program kicks in at the end of this month, call and call again to ask about your expired GPUs from last month. It’s doubtful they’ll extend 2011-earned upgrades, but you never know.
My current – 2012 GPUs earned in October 2012 have been extended already. To 31 Jan 2014. My 1 RPU expiring 31 Dec 12 has the same date, all other also expire 31 Jan 2014 now.
