One of the perks of holding million-miler status on United Airlines is the ability to share your current Premier status with a spouse or companion. And having just achieved the one million mile mark, I went through the remarkably simple process to do just that.
United’s million-mile congrats email
To further clarify, MileagePlus allows you to share your status with, “a spouse, significant other or individual who resides at the same home address, based on MileagePlus profile information.â€
Once your mileage balance reflects at least one million miles, you can the visit the dedicated page on United’s website to complete the one-step process.
Simple one-step process
After plugging in the person’s MileagePlus number, you receive an onscreen confirmation as well as email letting you know that their status should be updated within 48 hours.
Sharing status confirmation
My companion’s status immediately went from general member to Premier Silver, which was odd since I’m a Premier 1K currently. But instead of calling United to get it fixed, I decided to wait to see if it would auto-correct after 48 hours.
And by the next morning, it indeed corrected and my companion’s status showed up as 1K.
A few important things to note about the benefit are as follows:
- The companion benefit is awarded on an annual basis and is non-transferable.
- Your designated companion will automatically renew each year unless you let MileagePlus know otherwise by November 30 of the current year.
- You may change the companion on your account; however the change will not be in effect until January 1 of the following year. All change requests must be made by November 30 (for changes to existing companion nominations) or December 30 (for first-time nominations) to be effective for the following year.
- Your companion will be sent his or her own individual Premier credentials and does not need to be traveling with you to receive the benefits of the Premier level awarded.
- If you earn a higher Premier level during the program year, your companion will also receive that higher status level. However, if your companion earns a higher Premier level, your account status will not change.
It’s a great benefit if your spouse or companion doesn’t already fly an equivalent amount as you, as well as giving them the ability to enjoy the perks of your status when they’re flying solo.

I don’t quite understand why sharing your status to a companion still need to have same address ? I would understand a spouse would have same address, but companion ? Come on, does everybody have roommates ? And the roommates would fly often and UA only ? It is not logical at all. I have a close friend is willing to share his status, as unless I fly another ORD-HKG roundtrip between now and end of the year, I don’t even qualify for gold next year, and I certainly don’t have any plans to do it, I guess I will have to change my IL address to my friend’s CA address then.
